What a scary thing for a child! The idea of going to a new place, full of unfamiliar people is such an overwhelming thing! Well, it doesn’t have to be! One of the most significant ways you can prepare your kindergartner is by showing them a healthy enthusiasm for trying new and exciting things regarding school. If you show a genuine excitement about school, your child will pick up on it!
It is critical that all learning occurring at school is being reinforced at home. This is especially true in the areas of reading and math. By discussing what your child is learning at school you are reinforcing the concept that your child has learned as well as the idea of the importance of school.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing your kindergartner for their first day of SCHOOL!
• Reading readiness is important to the growth of learning sound and symbol associations, as all letters will be taught by the second month of school.
• Reading to your child can be a lot of fun, better yet, let him tell you what each letter is and/or sounds like. Reward your child’s accomplishments with affection and praise!
• Development of fine motor skills is necessary for preparation for first grade, give your child plenty of opportunities to use pencils, crayons, and scissors and remind them regularly as to their proper usage.
• Get your children active with fun, make-believe and physical play activities that allow them to use their imagination and their bodies.
• Encourage your child to get plenty of rest. At this age children better function if they have had a suitable and restful amount of sleep.
• Send a clean change of clothes with your child, we know that accidents can and will happen!
• Feed your child lots and lots of fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water to drink! You know what they say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
